Laitumkhrah Bengali Higher Secondary School is a premier co-educational institution situated at Upper New Colony, Laitumkhrah, Shillong. The school was a pioneer in girls’ education in the city of Shillong predominantly among the Bengali populace during the pre-independence times. It initially began as a Bengali Medium Lower Primary School in the year 1940 at the active initiative of Miss Sushila Sen, the erstwhile Inspectress of Schools, and received recognition from the then Government of Assam in the year 1948. Later on, the effort of the school authorities resulted in securing a substantial area of land, presently in occupation of the Secondary School, and made it possible for the management to upgrade the institution as Middle English School which received recognition from the authorities by the year 1952. Subsequently, the school was upgraded to a High School on the 1st August, 1957 with the amalgamation of High and M.E. sections. The school was brought under the Deficit grant-in-aid system in the year 1961 and the same status has been maintained ever since. Later on, after its conversion into an English Medium co-educational institution by the early nineties, the school started drawing students from all communities and is endowed with its excellence of providing education to the secondary learners. The school now boasts of extending educational facilities by opening the Higher Secondary Section (Arts) ‘MBOSE Syllabus’ from the session 2022-2023.
